Acidity Testing Kit
Portable and accurate determination of acidity (neutralisation value) in transformer and insulating oils. Essential for monitoring oil degradation and ensuring transformer longevity.
Overview
The Acidity Testing Kit is designed for the accurate determination of the neutralisation value (acidity) of transformer and insulating oils. Acidity is a critical quality indicator — as transformer oil degrades, acidic by-products form and accelerate insulation deterioration.
Regular acidity testing per IS:1448 allows maintenance teams to make informed decisions on oil filtration, treatment, or replacement — preventing transformer failure and extending equipment life.
Why Acidity Matters
- Oil Degradation Indicator — Rising acidity signals oxidation and thermal breakdown of oil
- Insulation Attack — Acidic oil attacks cellulose insulation, reducing transformer life
- Corrosion Risk — Acids corrode internal metal parts and windings
- Maintenance Decision Tool — Guides oil replacement or regeneration schedule
- Compliance — Required testing per IS:1448 and IEC standards
Kit Contents & Method
- Standard Solutions — Pre-prepared KOH and indicator solutions
- Burette & Stand — Precision glass burette for accurate titration
- Conical Flask — Borosilicate glass reaction vessel
- Measuring Cylinders — For accurate volume measurement of oil sample
- Colour Indicator — Phenolphthalein indicator for clear endpoint detection
- Instruction Manual — Step-by-step testing procedure per IS:1448
Test Procedure
A measured oil sample is dissolved in a solvent mixture and titrated with standard potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution using phenolphthalein indicator. The volume of KOH consumed determines the neutralisation value, expressed in mg KOH per gram of oil.
Acceptance Limits (IS:1448)
- New Oil — Max 0.03 mg KOH/g
- In-Service Oil (Caution) — 0.1–0.2 mg KOH/g
- In-Service Oil (Action Required) — Above 0.2 mg KOH/g
